BLOOD DRIVE
February 8, 2010
10 AM - 2 PM
Blood is vital to life. Every three seconds someone needs blood. Approximately 34,000 pints of red blood cells are needed each day. Over 7,000 blood components are transfused each year at Mercy Medical Center’s Acute Care Hospital and the figure continues to climb.
This life-giving resource is depleted because of many critical medical conditions:
* Trauma or accident
* Blood loss during major surgery
* Severe burns
* Anemia resulting from chemotherapy
* Certain blood disorders
There is no substitute for human blood. Medical care depends upon a steady supply of blood from healthy volunteer blood donors. While it is estimated that 60% of the population are eligible to donate, less than 5% actually do.
